Banking and Expansion

Wise was launched in 2011 with the vision of making international money transfers cheap, fair, and simple. Today we’re about much more than just moving money. We’re building the world’s best international account experience. In 2021 we launched Assets in the UK, a new type of a bank account. Assets allows customers to back the money they hold with Wise through different asset classes such as stocks or bonds while retaining the instant access and spend functionality of a current account.

We’re looking for a Senior Banking and Expansion Lead to join our London office. You’ll be responsible for expanding the Assets product to new markets in addition to building strong commercial relationships to enable the best product experience for our customers.

You’ll be working closely with the Assets Product team, an autonomous team within Wise consisting of Product Managers, Designers, Engineers, Product Compliance and Operations. You’ll provide the team with investment services expertise, shaping the product vision and helping change the future of finance. This isn’t just a job, it’s a revolution!

Your Mission:

1 – Expand the Assets product to new international markets

  • Analyse the optimal route to market for the Assets product, taking into account how customer needs differ from market-to-market, product functionality and local regulatory requirements.
  • Lead and manage the end-to-end process of applying for regulatory licences in new markets to enable us to offer the Assets product outside of the UK.
  • Build a good working relationship with the regulatory authorities to ensure a smooth licensing process and set Wise up for success once the licence has been granted.
  • Ensure that the operating model agreed with regulators is efficient and aligns with our product and customers needs.
  • Find relevant local partners such as lawyers to provide targeted advice on matters relevant for the licensing process.
  • Source and / or hire any personnel that may be required to obtain the licence such as a local compliance officer or financial controller.
  • Liaise closely with teams across Wise such as Product, Finance and Compliance to ensure that we have the necessary resources and processes in place to successfully sustain operations in new markets.

2 – Build strong commercial relationships

  • Identify new commercial relationships to optimise the product experience for customers in terms of price, coverage and available asset classes.
  • Onboard new partners and negotiate contracts, taking into account commercial priorities as well as risks.
  • Manage our existing commercial relationships to ensure that they are delivering the best outcomes for our customers in terms of price and coverage.

3 – Identify new strategic opportunities

  • Shape the product vision and roadmap alongside the product manager, thinking about our customer needs, blockers and opportunities.
  • Work closely with the Product Manager and the wider product team to prioritise opportunities taking into consideration the product roadmap, resource and product build requirements.
  • Bring new ideas to the product team to test, build and launch.

This role will give you the opportunity to:

  • Change the way that people view a bank account, taking control back from the banks and giving it to the person that matters most; the customer.
  • Choose your own path to success – you’ll have the freedom to define your priorities and the responsibility for making them happen.
  • Be flexible in how and where you work, we know that everyone needs a little something different so we’ll do our best to make it happen.
  • Travel internationally to work with our global teams, as well as meet various commercial partners and government organisations as and when needed.
  • Inspire teams with your ideas, knowledge and self-starting attitude.

You may be a good fit if:

  • You have worked in a fast moving environment, are happy to work independently, flexibly and take the initiative. You have experience growing an early stage product into something larger.
  • You’re hands on and a strong individual contributor.  You are able to operate at many levels of detail, flipping between executing as an individual contributor and as well as building support from different stakeholders across the business for new ideas and initiatives. We work in autonomous teams, so you’ll need an entrepreneurial and collaborative mindset to thrive.
  • You have negotiated commercial relationships with a clear product vision and understanding in mind. You are able to figure out the ideal operational and commercial process with new partners.
  • You are familiar with the investment services industry and understand different financial products, how they work, as well as their risks and target markets.
  • You are familiar with how fund managers and financial institutions work. You are strong at managing those relationships and are constantly creating opportunities to improve them.
  • You have a good understanding of investment services regulation in a changing environment.
  • You are passionate about our mission and transforming the financial industry for good.
  • You have flexibility for some international travel (around 10-20% of time).
  • You have fresh ideas – You don’t accept the status quo, but are interested in solving problems in novel ways. You are able to communicate the impact of those ideas and formulate plans to implement them.

We’re people without borders — without judgement or prejudice, too. We want to work with the best people, no matter their background. So if you’re passionate about learning new things and keen to join our mission, you’ll fit right in.

Also, where and what you studied isn't important to us. If you’ve got great experience, the right skills for the role and you’re great at articulating your thinking, we’d like to hear from you.

And because we believe that diverse teams build better products, we’d especially love to hear from you if you’re from an under-represented demographic.
