Current banking systems don’t let us send, spend or receive money across borders easily. Or quickly. Or cheaply. 

So, we’re building a new one.

And, we’re looking for talented Backend Engineers to join our Regional Expansion teams to join our mission and build our product, creating a scalable, performing platform that serves our customers. 

Your mission:

In this role you’ll get to work with other Engineers in the Europe and North America regional teams on challenging technical problems across the full product life-cycle. You’ll be leading the development of complex systems that translate into smooth customer experience. Your mission is to make sending, spending, and receiving money in the region convenient, instant, and close to free – as well as finding ways to reach the potential customers we’re not yet helping.

You will:

  • Integrate with local payment rails and work side by side with regional partners to connect Wise and their systems
  • Optimise operations and extend our platform for new use cases
  • Model and implement changes to our payment processing, scaling it to handle 10x the current volume
  • Mentor new joiners and talented engineers in their early careers, setting them up for success

This role will give you the opportunity to:

Of course, you can always gather feedback from smart, curious people across Wise, but you’ll have the freedom to make your own calls

  • Travel (when things go back to normal) to work with our teams in London and Tallinn as well as meet various partners and organisations when needed
  • Inspire teams and grow others with your ideas, knowledge and self-starting attitude

What does it take:  

  • You have a strong product mindset and passion for user experience. You prioritise work with the customers in mind and  make data-driven decisions to fix customer pain-points
  • You’re passionate about helping others and keen to roll up your sleeves and take ownership of impactful projects
  • You have great communication skills and the ability to articulate complex, technical concepts to engineers and non-technical audience
  • You have solid Java 13 plus knowledge and experience with Spring framework and messaging systems (Kafka)
  • You have experience working with relational and non-relational databases, query optimisation and designing schemas
  • You’ve got a deep understanding of Continuous Delivery strategies and testing practices in a microservice architecture
  • You believe in and follow best coding practices, code reviews and open feedback

Some extra things that would be awesome:

  • You’ve worked with large distributed systems
  • Experience with Kubernetes is a plus
  • You’re willing to travel and interested in working with and learning from our Engineers across our global offices
  • You have a basic understanding about frontend technologies, like React or Angular
  • You’re excited to work in a disruptive, fast-growing and fun environment

…but don’t worry, we don’t expect you to know everything!

What the first six months in this role will look like:

  • You onboarded and found your place through understanding your team and tribe vision and how you can contribute
  • You learnt the Wise (Fintech) and team specific domains (Regional, Crime fighting, Core)
  • You embraced our tech culture: how we build stuff, and specific details of the tech stack 
  • You deployed / gone through the entire lifecycle of a microservice on your own
  • Gone through two quarterly plannings and proposed a few ideas to take your product further
